City Riots – Essential Requirements

We hope that you have not been directly or indirectly affected by these disturbances; however, some of you will be and we are therefore advising you of the strict requirements on reporting any incident that may give rise to a claim to ensure that we can seek settlement on your behalf.

The strict requirements are two-fold:

  1. It is a policy condition that claims arising from riots are notified to us within seven days without fail. Please ensure that you do so.
    And in addition
  2. Under the Riot Damages Act 1886 there is a requirement for you to inform the Police within fourteen days of the incident. You must obtain a Crime Reference Number and inform them that you intend to make a claim against them for the cost of any loss or damage under the Act. We urge you to do this immediately.

Failure to comply with both of these requirements will result in your claim being time barred. Please telephone us immediately if you have suffered a loss as a result of the disturbances and require any advice or assistance from us relating to your claim.

Fraudulent Hire Seminar

Allan Chapman & James and UK Screen hosted a joint seminar at The Hospital Club, London to cover some of the key pre-hire checks and issues surrounding fraudulent hire currently affecting the industry. A recent spate of fraudulent thefts has highlighted the need for stringent pre-hire checks, including credit reference, trusted trade references and sufficient personal identification.

Allan Chapman & James' Corporate Sales Director, Simon Miller, also highlighted to the attendees the areas to check on customers hired in equipment insurance cover notes and encouraged hire companies to contact insurance brokers to verify information provided by the hirer.

In addition to the recent fraudulent thefts the potential for fraud at the London 2012 Olympics was also discussed as the members are expecting an influx of overseas production companies looking to hire significant levels of equipment. The checking of overseas companies obviously brings with it even greater difficulties and Allan Chapman & James and UK Screen are investigating at Government level and with LOCOG the possibility of accessing trade references or credit checks for such companies.

A lengthy Q & A session followed the presentation and if you would like a summary of the presentation or have any queries with the issues raised, please do not hesitate to email or call us on 01206 500 000.
